Tigers

“There is nothing like the thrill of walking Through a jungle looking for a tiger and Knowing that they could already be watching you”

- Ashlan Gorse Cousteau

Let's start with their birth, they are born blind and helpless. The mother takes care of the cubs for about 24 months. But sadly, only a few survive to adulthood. Tigers grow up to be the largest cats in the jungle. Unlike the other cats, tigers are excellent swimmers and can swim for hours, they can even kill in the water (ain’t that fascinating?).

Tigers are nocturnal animals (What?)It means that they are mostly active at night and less during the day (and why is that?)because their night vision is six times greater than that of humans. We have seen a lot of videos of tigers killing their prey or you might have even seen it in real life but the hunt is not always successful, a tiger's hunt is only successful once in 10-15 attempts.

Let's come to their appearance, the stripes, you probably would have heard that the black and orange bands help the tigers to camouflage, did you know the tiger’s skin is striped too and every tiger has a unique pattern of stripes just like our fingerprints. Tigers can weigh up to 300 kgs. The tail helps them balance while making steep turns. They have large padded feet which help them to sneak up on their prey. Their hind legs are longer than their forelimbs, which makes it easier for them to jump. They can jump about 20-30 feet in one leap. Their roar is just amazing and can be heard up to 2 miles away.

They live for about 8-10 years in the wild. They are now known as one of the most threatened animals in the world, their population went down by 95% in the last decade. The main reasons for their extinction is destruction of habitat and climate change. Our generation is fortunate enough to know about these apex predators and even have the opportunity to see them in real life but unfortunately if the situation remains the same the tigers will just be an addition to the list of extinct animals and no one will realize how special they are. In order to prevent this drastic and significant measures need to be taken, even on a student based level you can be responsible for saving a tiger’s life.
