The Vanishing Roar
Lion
“A simple act of kindness and compassion towards a
single animal may not mean anything
to all creatures, but will mean everything to one.”
― Paul Oxton
“Lions”- the word that comes to my mind when I see them is WOW! They are truly beautiful and proud creatures. Oh wait, now I get why a group of lions is called a pride, huh! You know that most of the lions are found in Africa but there are a few beyond the African savannas, like the Asiatic lions which are found only in India, mainly in the Gir National Park of Gujarat. Have you ever heard a lion roar? Well, you can hear them roar even if you are 8kms away from them. Have you ever wondered why a lion is called the king of the jungle? It's because of their unconditioned power and fearlessness, they fear no other animal and that's why they are called the king of the jungle. Although the lion is known as “the king of the jungle,” lions do not live in jungles. They live only in grasslands and plains.
Lions play a key role in the food chain by helping to control the herbivore population. If the herbivore population is not regulated, the increase of competition among them would cause some to go extinct and thus reduce biodiversity. The lions have a reputation of being the ‘chief’ predator of their habitat as they are known to even kill large herbivores such Elephants and Giraffe. And did you know they usually hunt at night because they have terrific night vision.
But the sad part is that lions are vulnerable. Trophy hunting is devastating for lions for several reasons. First, when an adult male (the most sought-after trophy) is killed, his death destabilizes and may destroy an entire pride. Second, it wipes out the genes of the largest and most healthy males. This is just one reason among many as to why lions are killed. And only one in eight lion’s survive to adulthood, this contributes to a decrease in the lion population.
There are numerous ways as to how you can help in the conservation of lions. You can donate money to various institutions which fund for nature such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The World Wildlife Fund is a non-profit organization that helps protect threatened species and their habitat (wow!). You can also create awareness among people by sharing this message so more people can contribute to saving them. This will also show the poachers that there will be thousands against them even if one animal is harmed. Here are a few people who focus on bringing love for wildlife into people's heart:
1. Dean Schneider- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jenVMnOi2uA
2. Kevin Richardson-https://www.youtube.com/user/LionWhispererTV
3.Irwins- Crickey! It’s the Irwins (show)
All of these people have increased my love for wildlife and inspired me to save them. I hope this blog introduces the same sentiments towards the wildlife in your hearts as the Irwin's and the others did in mine! The more this message and it's sentiment spreads, the more land they get in their habitat.
