The endangered marsupial

     Tasmanian Devil

“We can’t help everyone,

but everyone can help someone.”

-Ronald Reagan

This is a tasmanian devil, sometimes misunderstood, a cheeky little creature. They are the largest carnivorous marsupial (what is a marsupial?). A marsupial is the one who carries the little one in their pouch, (but isn’t that only kangaroos and koalas?) no, there are 330 species of marsupials (wow! 330!?).

They were found in the mainland of Australia but about 3000 years ago they went extinct in mainland Australia because they were hunted by dingoes.  As there are no dingoes in Tasmania, the devils are the island's state top predator. They have one of the most powerful bite.

The mom gives birth to around 20-30 joeys which are the size of a rice grain and they all try to climb up to the mother’s pouch but only a few make it till the pouch, they stay in the pouch for around 3 months and then they are ready to come out and explore the world.

In the 1800’s the farmers of Tasmania thought of eradicating the species because the devils would kill their poultry. Now tassie devils are a protected species and have not met the same fate as tasmanian tigers (let's hope they never do because we have already lost a very important and amazing specie). Since the late 1990s, the devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) has drastically reduced the population and now threatens the survival of the species, which in 2008 was declared to be endangered.

You guys would wonder what could go wrong if one species become extinct right? The tassie devils help in keeping the environment clean, they are effective scavengers of dead animals and roadkills. If the tasmanian devils go extinct then the carrion would litter the sides of the roads in Tasmania which will lead to spreading of diseases. As the tassie devils are on the top of the food chain there will be no predators of the smaller mammals which would lead to a drastic increase in their population and increase competition for food.
